25) 245

Let number of representatives of Blue Party prior to General Elections = R
Number of representatives of Red Party prior to General Elections = 2.5R

In order for the lead to be reduced by 56, 28 seats must have gone to the only other Party, the Blue Party. The Blue Party will gain 28 seats and the Red Party will lose 28, decreasing the lead by 56.

So number of representatives of Blue Party after General Elections = R + 28
Number of representatives of Red Party after General Elections = 1.5 (R + 28) = 1.5R + 42

Total number of representatives will be the same prior to and after elections. So we get the equation:

R + 2.5R = 1.5R + 42 + R + 28
R + 2.5R – 1.5R – R = 70
R = 70

Total number of seats = R + 2.5R = 3.5R = (3.5 x 70) = 245 seats
