5) D

The better of the two scores is used to identify the qualifiers. We must first make a list of scores which were the highest from 1 to 15

1 – 6.12
2 – 6.88
3 – 7.08
4 – 7.34
5 – 6.71
6 – 5.90
7 – 7.06
8 – 6.58
9 – 6.14
10 – 7.17
11 – 6.52
12 – 5.70
13 – 7.29
14 – 6.97
15 – 6.53

The top 3 scores were: 7.34, 7.29, 7.17
Those scores who came within 50cm of third place were must be within the limit of 6.67-7.17
Number of scores within that limit: 6.88, 7.08, 6.71, 7.06, 6.97 (5 scores)
Number of qualifiers = 3 + 5 = 8
So, D is the answer.
